The Big Car Sleepout17 September 2010
On the 23rd October Christians Against Poverty are hosting a nationwide Big Car Sleepout. They’re looking for hundreds of churches to host a sleepout in their car park and for others to join the CAP Bradford team and sleep in their cars overnight.
John Kirkby, founder of CAP, said “we want to highlight the fact that debt drives people to desperation. It is the most widespread cause of poverty and misery in the UK. Debt causes stress, illness, relationship breakdown, eviction or suicide. These aren’t just a few isolated cases – 33% of our clients told us they contemplated suicide as the only way out before we stepped in. Some clients were even sleeping in their cars for months, as they had nowhere else to go.”
The campaign is also aiming to raise £250,000 to help open up to forty new debt counselling centres in October. Through CAP, the local church in these towns will bring the good news that there is hope and a real solution for people who are living in desperate debt situations.
