WHAT IS A COMMUNITY GROCERY

Lincoln Community Grocery stocks good food that would have gone to waste and makes it available for members for just £5 per shop. For that, they can fill their basket with fresh fruit and veg, pantry items, chilled and frozen food and toiletries.

Acts Trust launched Lincoln Community Grocery as a partnership with Alive Church, The Message Trust, and Lincoln Central Methodist Church. Since opening in October 2021, we’ve had an overwhelming response from local people who have described it as a place to find Hope.

“The truth is that many people, regardless of their background or circumstances, may find themselves benefiting from shopping in a place like Lincoln Community Grocery, From my years working as a debt coach, I realised that it’s not always those on the lowest income that need support. Many families with working parents are still struggling to put enough good food on the table.”

HOW DOES A COMMUNITY GROCERY WORK

1: Membership to Lincoln Community Grocery costs £5 for one year.

2: Members can visit the Grocery up to five times per week.

3: In a standard shop, members don’t pay per item, rather they pay a set £5, for which they can fill their shopping basket with a selection of:

Fresh fruit and veg
Tins and packeted food
Refrigerated food
Frozen food
Toiletries
‘Mix and Match’ items

4: Members can also top up their shop by purchasing ‘little extras’

5: That’s not all! Members can access courses and additional projects that can empower them to overcome any challenges they may be facing, including:

Job Clubs
Budgeting Courses
Life Skills training
Healthy Eating
Wellbeing Courses
Friendship and Support Groups
Alpha Courses

“When the £20 per week top up ended, some people said, it’s not much, but to me, that’s a fifth of my income. It’s amazing here, I can get so much fresh food for the kids, I can make up soups that last several meals. My partner has always wanted to bake a cake, and now I can pick up a few of the ingredients every time I come and soon she’ll have what she needs.”
