An update from the Community Grocery
As the cost of food, utilities and living continues to rise, it’s tougher than ever for families to put food on the table. Our aim at Lincoln Community Grocery is to ensure that anyone struggling to feed their family has access to a good choice of affordable food.
Membership is £5.00 per year, and we offer a range of shops from £5.00 for 12 items up to £12.50 for 30 items.
The Community Grocery is about more than food. The £5.00 membership also gives free access to the courses running in store too. Whether looking to learn a new skill or want to meet new people, there will be something available for everyone.
To enable us to operate the grocery we rely on a fantastic team of volunteers, if you would like to volunteer call into the grocery for a chat about how you could help. One of our volunteers said the following about what volunteering at the grocery means to her:
“Being a volunteer at the grocery gives me a strong sense of purpose. The joy and fulfilment you get is like no other. It feels like one big volunteer family and inspires me so much. Being able to help people when they need it most is a special gift, to be able to build relationships and get to know members makes me so happy. After every shift at the grocery, I go home feeling a warmth I have never felt before.”
We see daily the real difference that coming into the grocery makes to so many people and the following was taken from a card given to us from one of our members who was moving away from Lincoln:
“A huge thank you for everything you have done for our family, the food has made a massive difference to us but just as impactful has been your warm welcome every time we visit. Arriving in Lincoln we didn’t know anyone and with a baby and little girl in tow your open door, helping, greeting and making us feel like we belong has made such a difference, All the foods we have been able to share together and with friends. Thank you for the all the work you do to keep the doors open and shelves stocked. We have appreciated you all so much and as we move on we will miss our visits to the grocery.”
