Embracing Change This Autumn

The end of summer often feels like a turning point in the year. After weeks of long daylight hours and school holidays the start of September often feels different and often comes with a change of pace. For some, autumn brings a welcome return to routine and cosy evenings. For others, it can feel overwhelming and very difficult.

At Acts Trust, we we continue to walk alongside people in Lincoln who may find this time of year challenging our Foodbanks, Night Light Cafes, Community Grocery and Restore Courses are all open and ready to walk alongside those who just need someone there beside them.

The Challenge of Change

The back-to-school season brings mixed emotions. For some families, the return to routine is helpful. But for many already stretched, the cost of uniforms, stationery, and lunches creates extra stress.

One mum we recently met at the Foodbank described it as “everything hitting at once.” Choosing between food and school essentials left her exhausted and anxious. Stories like hers are sadly common, especially in September and then moving forward into the winter months.

Autumn also affects mental health. Darker evenings and shorter days can weigh heavily, particularly for those already struggling with loneliness, anxiety, or depression.

Finding Stability in Community

That’s why community is at the heart of all we do. At Lincoln Foodbank, support goes beyond emergency parcels, our Distribution Centers are also places where we can also listen, encourage, and connect people to further help. Our Community Grocery is open to all and provides an incredible affordable alternative to the other supermarkets in Lincoln.

Our Night Light Cafés provide another kind of support. For those experiencing mental health difficulties, a warm, welcoming space in the evening can make all the difference. One guest recently shared: “It’s not about having to talk—it’s knowing someone cares enough to be there. That gets you through.”

Meanwhile, our Restore Courses are here to come alongside people helping with setting good routines, budgeting, cooking and so much more.
