Where Are Your Feet?

Written by Kerry Robinson

Where are your feet? At the bottom of my legs I hear you say – probably thinking, what an earth am I about to read about?! Well, hear me out…

I have this little saying that I read in a book a while ago that I really love. I use this often and share it with many! Maybe it can help you too…Where are my feet?

You know those days when things seem a little too busy: you may have stuff going on (such is life!), overwhelm creeps in and the familiar thoughts such as ‘Today feels too much’, ‘Why did I agree to this?!’ ‘I can’t cope’ – insert your own overwhelming thoughts here……………………..

When these thoughts creep in I try to stop, take some deep breaths and ask myself: ‘Where are my feet?’

It stops me in the moment, helps to ground me and allows me time to remind myself that this too shall pass.

By stopping, pausing and breathing it can help to break that feeling of overwhelm building up to the point of stress. We all know how easily this can happen and before we know it we can’t fully concentrate and all the little jobs suddenly feel so much bigger!

Sometimes on busy days I may be asking myself often ‘Where are my feet?’ and I have found it can really help. Sometimes we need a reminder to stop, slow down, and to breathe! To remind ourselves gently that this too shall pass. It’s not trying to run away from those thoughts but having the acceptance that you are feeling a certain way, of course we don’t love those overwhelming feelings but we can’t just run from them and pretend they aren’t there otherwise they get bigger and lead to stress. Feelings of overwhelm can feel so powerful but they do pass and this little saying can help us to pause and reset throughout the day.

Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed give it a go:

Stop
Ask yourself: where are my feet?
Take some deep breaths
Feel yourself grounded
Remind yourself this too shall pass
Carry on with your day

Repeat as many times as needed!
