Cooking with Kemi

By Kemi Ibironke

At Acts Trust, we engage people from different backgrounds in the community through our Restore programmes. The Cook & Craft session with Kemi is one of such which has been transformational, with lovely people from different backgrounds coming together to put an end to poverty by sharing tips on cooking on a budget.

This course delivers and demonstrates different practical ways and recipes of cooking on a budget with every guest present. During last week’s session, we prepared Nigerian Jollof Rice, roasted plantain with vegetable sauce and other delicious meals enjoyed with guests.

Guess what! We got some interesting quotes from guests who attended the sessions. One of the guests said:

‘I never believed I could cook something as delicious as this’

This is more than cooking on a budget, its meeting a need in the community. Guests learn how to cook healthy and delicious meals on a low budget to empower them while building a stronger community.

At the start of September last month, the team launched Cook & Xraft with Kemi. Guests were invited to register through the QR code and were welcomed into each session with a lovely smile and tea/coffee offered. The programme, with 8 ladies in attendance at the first session, received some positive feedback. We had guests from different countries all present with one focus: learning healthy recipes on a low budget. The sessions organised so far had between 6-8 guests who attended each course with the introduction of a new recipe (allergies considered).

As part of Acts Trust’s vision to deliver empowering course sessions, the team had recently visited the Mint Lane Wellbeing Hub in Lincoln and had a discussion on how to work on a partnership strategy for a more inclusive approach. Interestingly, Acts Trust, together with the Mint Lane Lincoln will work in partnership in the coming weeks, delivering the Cook with Kemi sessions on alternate Tuesdays. The aim is to spread the positive change and engage more people in the city of Lincoln, reaching out through other partners. As we launch this new phase, we hope to promote equity, diversity and inclusion by working with guests within the community to achieve one goal i.e ‘putting an end to poverty’.
